Orff: Carmina Burana

Sunday 27 June, 6.30pm

Latin for 'Songs of Beuren', 'Carmina Burana' is the name given to a manuscript containing hundreds of colourful poems and dramatic texts, written in Medieval Latin, Middle High German and some Old French, dating from the 11th, 12th and 13th centuries.

Carl Orff was a music educator from Munich who in the 1920s and 1930s revolutionised the teaching of music to young children in Germany. As with his approach to music education, Orff's setting of 24 poems from 'Carmina Burana' is full of driving rhythms superbly combined with simple melodies and harmonies, which immediately engage both performer and listener alike.

For the first time, Cambridge Chorale and Phoenix Chorale (the newly formed youth choir for Cambridgeshire) join forces to create a chorus of more than 100 voices and, with award-winning instrumentalists (playing two pianos and a spectacular array of percussion), look forward to taking you on a breathtaking musical journey.
