American Connections

Saturday 4 July, 7.30pm

American Connections… a choral celebration for Independence Day. Cambridge Chorale and friends return to the beautiful setting of St Mary’s Church, Saffron Walden, with a superb programme of American-themed choral works.

Leonard Bernstein’s intriguing transatlantic commission, Chichester Psalms, performed here in its chamber version for organ, harp and percussion, is set alongside Michael Tippett’s moving arrangements of African-American spirituals taken from his oratorio, A Child of Our Time. Further choral masterpieces featured include Samuel Barber’s exquisite Agnus Dei, and Water Night from the USA’s hottest contemporary composer, Eric Whitacre. Finally, five of the best-loved American folk songs – including Yankee Doodle and Shenandoah – are given an imaginative makeover, courtesy of English arranger Daryl Runswick.
