The Choir

Cambridge Chorale has become, since our founding in 1994, one of the most successful choirs of the region. We have performed in many Cambridge venues, including the chapels of Jesus College, Queens' College and Selwyn College, Great St. Mary's Church and West Road Concert Hall, and also further afield in the cathedrals of Ely, Peterborough and St Paul's, London. In addition we have taken part in many special events such as the King's Lynn Festival, and a performance of Messiah at Australia House, the Australian Embassy in London, and concerts in Thaxted, Aldeburgh and other East Anglian venues.

We perform a wide range of music; our programming spans the cultural divide to include great music from many sources, classical, popular, jazz and folk. Some concerts have been devoted to the music of a particular country or region, some to major choral works, such as Messiah, the Mozart Requiem, Carmina Burana; many have included modern and contemporary music: we were the first to perform Rihards Dubra in this country, and have commissioned and performed a work for choir, percussion and electric string quartet.

The choir has toured Italy six times: highlights have included concerts in the Cervo International Music Festival, the Umbria 'In Canto 2000 Festival', St Mark's Venice and San Fransesco in Assisi. In March 2002 Cambridge Chorale achieved a unique double triumph at the Riva del Garda International Choral Competition in Italy, where 38 choirs from 22 countries were competing. The choir, entering a competition for the first time, won gold medals in each of the two categories they entered, taking 1st prize in the Mixed Voices category and 2nd Prize in the Sacred Music section. On the final evening, with category winners from Japan, Norway, Ukraine, Slovenia, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom, performed in front of the 1,000 strong audience, Chorale's success was crowned by winning the 'Gran Premio del Pubblico'. In April 2003 the choir toured Sardinia: concert venues included the famous caves of Zuddas, 200 metres into the mountainside!

We have made two CDs which are available on general release, and in addition the choir is in demand for commercial recordings and session work. Cambridge Chorale has a very wide-ranging repertoire and can provide an entertaining programme for dinners, parties and other special events, as well as music for more formal concerts and services.
