What to expect: rehearsals and concerts

We rehearse on Thursday nights, from 7.30 to 10pm, at Fulbourn Primary School, about five miles from Cambridge. We follow school terms, rehearsing for around twelve weeks (January - March, late April - July, mid September to mid December), with a week off in the middle for half term. There’s also one Saturday rehearsal every term, and the Thursday rehearsal for that week is usually skipped.

We perform four to six concerts every year, usually towards the end of term. On concert day we’ll have a rehearsal in the venue in the afternoon, followed by the concert in the evening. The repertoire is varied, from early polyphony through to new commissions, and spans multiple languages (including English, Latin, French, German, Latvian, Korean, Welsh, Italian, Russian, Tamil, Zulu, Hebrew, Spanish, Afrikaans, Igbo and pseudo-Lappish).

About the choir

The choir has more high voices than low; it’s around 60% women and 40% men, with ages ranging from early 20s to mid 50s. Entry is by audition, and the standard of music-making and sight-reading is good, which means we can spend more time working with the textures of the music, rather than learning the notes.

Choir members pay a subscription (currently £25 per month), which covers rehearsal costs.

On the social side, we’re a friendly crowd. After rehearsals and concerts, several members can be found in the local pub, and there are frequent evenings out for a curry, quiz, or something similar.
